Endodontic Retreatment

Any endodontic treatment is meant to last a lifetime if proper care is taken. However, sometimes the body doesn’t react well to the treatment, resulting in a failure to heal properly. Once this happens, chronic pain and discomfort may occur. At Dental Specialists of South Loop, our endodontists can perform an endodontic retreatment.

Causes for Retreatment

There are a number of reasons a tooth may not heal properly after this type of treatment, including:

  • A tooth’s canal was not treated properly during the first treatment.
  • A crown cap or another cover for the tooth was not applied after the procedure.
  • Contamination occurred within the tooth.
  • New gum decay caused infections to the treated tooth.
  • The crown or sealant became broken or loose, causing the treated area to open to new infections.
  • Trauma on the tooth is resulting in a fracture.

During the endodontic retreatment, one of our specialists will remove the filling material used in the first root canal procedure. Next, the specialist will clean the affected area, reshape the canal and put in a new filling sealant. After the tooth is fully healed, the endodontist will place a new crown to prevent further infections.
