Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is the most common and widely used sedation method in dentistry, mainly because it is so convenient. It can be used to manage mild to moderate anxiety and may also be appropriate to help the patient enjoy a restful night’s sleep prior to his or her dental appointment. The goal for the patient is to be mildly sedated and to feel relaxed. Oral sedation is not meant to produce moderate sedation or used for pain control.

Oral sedation, usually taken as a pill about an hour before the procedure, will make you feel quite groggy, although you will most likely remain awake. A larger dose, or the regular dose for some patients, may be enough to make you doze off during the procedure – though you will be easily awakened. If you are using oral sedation, you must arrange for a responsible adult escort to and from the dental appointment, due to the sedative effect of these medications.

Advantages of Oral Sedation

While it is still recommended that you consult with your primary physician prior to using oral sedatives, oral sedation is a safe option for most patients with medical conditions such as renal/hepatic diseases, cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, and diabetes. Additionally, oral sedation does not require any injections, special techniques, or specialized equipment, and offers a more cost-effective option for the patient than intravenous sedation.

When Oral Sedation Should Not be Used

Intravenous sedation is a better choice when rapid or titrated (monitored and constantly adjusted) sedation is desired, or the patient has a history of chronic drug use – this is important, as oral sedation is likely to be ineffective in patients with a high tolerance to certain drugs, or if the patient is being treated for bipolar disorder or depression. Oral sedatives should also be avoided if the patient has a known allergy to the sedative or is pregnant or nursing.
