Gum Recession
Receding Gums
Gum recession results when the gumline recedes or pulls away from the tooth, resulting in exposed root surfaces. Exposed roots can be very sensitive to temperature changes, air or sweets. Common causes of recession are inflammation, abnormal tooth position, orthodontic tooth movement, factitious habits, oral piercings, and the use of excessive pressure when brushing. It left untreated, gingival recession could compromise the health of a tooth, leading to tooth loss. Depending on the severity of the recession and the other factors, treatment might involve a non-invasive grafting or flap procedure to cover the root.
