Scaling and Root Planing

Periodontal disease is an advanced form of gum disease that can result in inflamed, bleeding gums, deteriorated bone and even tooth loss. When a patient is diagnosed with gum or periodontal disease, treatment is necessary in order to stop its progression. While endodontic surgery will likely be needed, the first step is a thorough cleaning, followed by dental scaling and root planing.

Dental Scaling

Scaling is the most common nonsurgical treatment for gum disease. Before scaling occurs, you will have an oral examination. When your dentist performs the actual procedure, he or she will use manual and/or ultrasonic instruments to remove plaque and tartar attached to the surface of the tooth crown. Removal of tartar and hardened plaque will clean the teeth and gums and prepare them for the root canal treatment.

Root Planing

In addition to dental scaling, you will need root planing before surgery. During root planing, the dentist will scale inside the pockets in the teeth, down to the root surface, using similar scaling tools. Then, the root of the tooth will be smoothed. This aids in the healing process, decreases inflammation of the gums and eliminates the plaque affecting gums and surrounding tissue and bone.

While neither of these procedures is comfortable, your dentist will numb the gum tissue with local anesthesia if you are sensitive. You may need to have each performed multiple times before surgery.
