Sedation Dentistry

If you find yourself coming up with a million excuses not to schedule your dental checkup – or have a cavity filled – don’t worry, you are not alone. The fear of going to the dentist is relatively common, and some people become so anxious about a dental visit that they’ll endure the pain and agony of a toothache rather than spend one minute in the dentist’s chair. Sedation dentistry offers a solution for anyone who fears going to the dentist – and provides a more comfortable and pleasant experience for every patient.

Sedation dentistry can reduce and even eliminate the anxiety that comes with a dental visit. Whether you’re coming in for a routine checkup and teeth cleaning or a more invasive procedure, sedation dentistry is an indispensable technique – helping to calm anyone who needs to visit the dentist, but especially those fearful of doing so.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Depending on the severity of the patient’s anxiety, and the treatment being performed, there are various options ranging from minimal to deep sedation – and these techniques can be utilized for any type of dental procedure, no matter how minimal. At South Loop Dental Specialists, we are a leading provider of sedation dentistry and we take pride in working with each patient to help them enjoy a comfortable, stress-free, and relaxing dental visit.

Sedation dentistry helps patients relax through the use of various medications. While often referred to as “sleep dentistry,” this is not really accurate. Unless the patient is being treated while using general anesthetic, patients are usually awake while under sedation.

The levels of sedation:

  • Minimal sedation – the patient is still awake but he or she is very relaxed
  • Moderate sedation – the patient may speak unintelligibly and probably won’t remember much of the procedure
  • Deep sedation – the patient is still able to be awakened but is on the edge of unconsciousness
  • General anesthesia – the patient is not easily awakened and is completely unconscious
