Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is an advanced form of gingivitis, or gum disease. It occurs when the natural bacteria in our mouths combine with mucus and other particles to create plaque on the surface of our teeth. If this plaque is not removed, it develops into tartar, which cannot be removed by a brushing. When tartar remains on the teeth for a long period of time, it can cause the gums to become inflamed and red, and to pull away from the teeth to create pockets that become infected easily. If left untreated, the teeth, gums and supporting bone and tissue can all be affected.

Those who smoke, have diabetes, and/or are on medications are at a higher risk for the disease. When periodontal disease is present, treatment of some sort is necessary. Depending on its severity, a patient may need surgery; however, there are non-surgical options available for more mild cases.

Prevention with Periodontal Maintenance

Once the periodontal disease has been treated and the progression has been stopped, we will provide you with a customized program to prevent it from recurring. Even if you practice proper dental hygiene (brushing and flossing every day, drinking plenty of water, eating healthy), you may simply be more susceptible to the disease, so regular examination and check-ups will be crucial to your dental health. These visits will include:

  • Discussion about your health
  • Oral examination and X-ray
  • Measuring of the pockets surrounding teeth
  • Removal of any plaque or tartar present
  • Prescribing medication to reduce tooth sensitivity or for other oral issues

The type of periodontal disease, your rate of plaque growth, how well you take care of your teeth day-to-day and other factors will determine how often you need to visit the dentist for periodontal maintenance.

At Dental Specialists of South Loop, we can treat periodontal disease and determine the best maintenance plan for your specific condition.
