What Are Dental Implants?

The desire for a beautiful smile is universal. Straight, pearly white teeth show off a person’s hygiene, self-awareness, and general good health. However, some people, whether they take excellent care of their teeth and gums or not, suffer many dental issues throughout their lifetime. These issues can include yellowing, crookedness, cavities, chipping, infections, gum disease, and finally tooth loss.

If you brush and floss religiously every day, and go to the dentist for regular checkups, the chances of losing your teeth are greatly decreased. However, tooth loss is a common issue in the world, and over the years doctors have developed ways to not just prevent, but actually fix such problems.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are hygienic and comfortable replacements for human teeth. Patients often learn about them when a tooth becomes diseased, falls out, is extracted, or gets broken.

Dealing with missing teeth is a cosmetic concern for many, but it can also damage a person’s jaw line, weaken the bone underneath their gum, and cause infections. Replacing a tooth is a relatively simple task with dental implants. They restore the healthy appearance of your smile with just a few visits to the dentist.

The Procedure

Your doctor will first focus on replacing the root of your lost tooth with an implant. This new implant will be an artificial anchor for the awaiting crown. The titanium root is inserted, and then allowed to settle into the bone. As time passes, the artificial root will become imbedded as the bone grows securely around it. Often, a temporary crown can be placed over the implant for a patient’s comfort while this time passes.

Replaced Tooth After Dental Implant

Once the root has solidified, a support post also known as an abutment is placed on top, followed by an artificial, yet permanent, crown. Crowns are the part that actually look like teeth. They are usually white, and durable enough to sit inside your mouth and act as your natural teeth would.

The entire process of dental implantation may take several visits to complete, and each session you will be provided with anesthesia or IV sedation to alleviate discomfort.
