Endodontist Chicago Loop
Chicago is home to a wide variety of dental professionals. Within Chicago’s Loop alone, you can find dozens of options for dental care. Different conditions, though, require different specialized care. For example, problems that deal with the root of the tooth require special dentists called endodontists. Endodontists are dentists that have undergone schooling beyond the scope of regular dental school in order to be able to diagnose and treat issues with the infected pulp of a tooth.
Parts of a Tooth
There are four main parts to the human tooth. The outer shell is called the enamel. This is the part of the tooth that protects the rest of the tooth and makes contact with our food. Below the enamel sits the dentin—the majority of the tooth. The dentin is made of a slightly softer material than the enamel and is generally yellowish in color. Below the dentin is the cementum, which acts as a barrier between the tooth’s nerve and the rest of the tooth. At the very center of the tooth is the pulp, or nerve, of the tooth. The pulp is what brings nutrients to the tooth to keep it healthy. However, the pulp of the tooth can get infected, which is where an endodontist comes in.
Endodontists & Root Canals
An endodontist can diagnose and treat the infected pulp of a patient’s tooth. Most often, this will involve a root canal procedure. This is usually performed by creating a small incision in the tooth and extracting the infected material. If left untreated, the infected pulp of a tooth can compromise a tooth altogether and lead to the loss of that tooth. By seeing an endodontist, you can mitigate the risk of tooth loss and prevent the problem from getting any worse.
Signs You May Have An Infection
You may need a root canal if you are experiencing sever tooth pain that comes in sharp waves. If this is the case, you’ll want to consult your dental professional immediately. If you do not address this, the pain will likely only get worse and you will find yourself with a much bigger problem on your hands than a quick root canal.
