Why Does Periodontal Disease Develop?

When plaque is stuck on your teeth for more than two or more days, it can harden and turn into tartar (calculus). Tartar can only be removed with a professional dental cleaning. The longer that plaque and tartar remains on your teeth, the more damage is caused.
Over time, the bacteria causes inflammation. This inflammation causes pockets to form between your teeth and gums. In addition, the inflammation leads to the bone loss. The body’s response (inflammation) to the presence of this bacteria causes bone loss. The bone loss can result in abscess and ultimately tooth loss. The moderate to advances stages of periodontal disease is typically treated by a periodontist.
