Periodontist Chicago South Loop

Chronic bad breath, bleeding gums, shifting teeth, and changes in your bite pattern are all signs that you might be in need of a consultation with a periodontist. The early stages of gum disease are often silent and go undetected. Periodontitis, also called periodontal or gum disease, is an infection that will affect your gums and destroy the supporting bone. When periodontitis is left untreated, it can increase your risk of stroke, heart attack, worsen blood glucose levels and diabetes, and ultimately lead to tooth loss. If you are uncertain about your gum health or have been diagnosed with gum disease, it is important that you talk to our periodontist. We are conveniently located in the South Loop of Chicago and in the North Shore area of Glenview.

Why Does Periodontal Disease Develop?

Periodontal disease is caused by the buildup of plaque. Plaque is the sticky film forms on your teeth. It is comprised of bacteria, saliva and food byproducts. Plaque is removed with proper oral hygiene in the form of brushing and flossing. When removed, plaque can reform within hours. When plaque is stuck on your teeth for more than two or more days, it can harden and turn into tartar (calculus). Tartar can only be removed with a professional dental cleaning. The longer that plaque and tartar remains on your teeth, the more damage is caused.

Over time, the bacteria causes inflammation. This inflammation causes pockets to form between your teeth and gums. In addition, the inflammation leads to the bone loss. The body’s response (inflammation) to the presence of this bacteria causes bone loss. The bone loss can result in abscess and ultimately tooth loss. The moderate to advances stages of periodontal disease is typically treated by a periodontist.
